Japanese: 雨降って地固まる
Romaji: Ame Futte Ji Katamaru
The literal translation of this Japanese proverb is “After the rain, the ground hardens”.
It expresses the idea that going through hardships and difficult times builds one’s strength and character so that they can endure harder times and tougher challenges in the future. It’s essentially a metaphorical way of affirming the notion that adversity builds character.
This proverb is a perfect reminder when going through tough times that just like rain, those hard times will eventually end. And once the storm has cleared and life goes back to normal, you will find yourself standing on stronger foundations than before, able to weather even bigger and darker storms that may come your way.
The proverb on this bracelet is accompanied by images of two cherry blossom flowers (sakura), and two samurai swords (katana).
Nowhere in the world is the sakura flower more cherished than in Japan, so much so that it was chosen as the country’s national flower.
In Japanese culture, it’s a timeless metaphor for and reminder of the fleeting human existence. However, it also represents rebirth and new beginnings. The flowering of the sakura has always signalled the beginning of the spring season, which is a time of renewal, new hope and optimism.
The symbol of the sakura was therefore chosen for this bracelet to represent a more hopeful, positive new life blooming after a dark, embattled time.
The katana is arguably one of Japan’s most powerful symbols, with traditions that go back thousands of years. In feudal Japan it was referred to as “the soul of the samurai” and was considered sacred as the symbol of the warrior.
The katana was chosen as part of this bracelet design to symbolise women going through dark times with the brave heart of a warrior. It’s intended to inspire you to persevere in your fight bravely until the storm eventually ends.
