Flectere Si Nequeo Superos, Acheronta Movebo
This proverb is literally translated as “If I cannot prevail upon the gods (to do my will), then I shall move Acheron (one of the five rivers of the underworld, or hell)”.
A less literal but perhaps more common translation is “If heaven won’t help me, then I’ll move the powers of hell”.
The proverb was chosen as a very bold and powerful affirmation that you will stop at absolutely nothing to achieve your objective. It makes the statement that even if Heaven and good fortune refuse to shine on you, you will shift misfortune and darkness out of your way to get where you’re going.
The quote is from Virgil, the great first century Roman poet, in his Aeneid, Book VII, 312.
According to Greek mythology, the Acheron was one of the five rivers that souls needed to cross to get to the underworld, or hell. If someone had been buried according to Greek custom with a gold coin, they would pay the Ferryman of the Dead, Charon, to cross. Those not given a proper burial were left stranded, forced to wander the shore of the river for all eternity.
The Acheron was also known as the “river of misery”, the “river of woe”, the “river of pain”, or the “river of lost souls”. If one fell in, they would be plagued with their woes and would be too inconsolable to get out.
Acheron is therefore commonly used to describe hell itself.
The proverb Flectere Si Nequeo Superos, Acheronta Movebo is a very fitting reminder when you need to maintain a relentless mindset for overcoming a dark time in your life.
