Aut Cum Scuto Aut In Scuto
Literally translated as “either with the shield or on the shield”, this is actually a Latin adaptation of the earlier Greek phrase ἢ τὰν ἢ ἐπὶ τᾶς, meaning “either with it or on it”.
This is a parting phrase that Spartan mothers and wives would say to their sons and husbands as they departed for battle. In doing so they would be imploring their beloved warriors to either come back carrying their shield or come back on their shield.
Because of the size and weight of the bronze Spartan shield, any warrior fleeing from the battlefield would drop their shield in order to run faster. A warrior returning with his shield, therefore, would not have fled battle but rather stood and fought bravely.
A warrior returning on his shield, on the other hand, was dead, since this was the manner in which slain warriors were customarily removed from the battlefield.
In this context, the meaning of the phrase becomes clear: Don’t surrender, do or die. A warrior was expected to return home either in victory with his shield, or his body carried back atop his shield after dying courageously in battle. These were his only options.
Despite this phrase’s gruesome origins, Aut Cum Scuto Aut In Scuto serves as a bold reminder and as encouragement to bravely fight any of life’s difficult challenges to the best of your abilities and never give up. To overcome your situation or die trying, figuratively speaking.
